Each year there are 4 million people who report suffering from constipation. There are two types – occasional and chronic constipation. The prolonged condition in which the digestive system is ill functioning puts the chronic constipation sufferer at risk for more serious ailments. A colon health cleanse removes compacted fecal matter in the colon and bowel and this brings relief from the discomfort caused by the obstruction. It also results in a noticeable reduction in weight.
The great American actor John Wayne was slim as a young man but steadily became heavier as he grew older. When he died, compacted hard fecal matter was found attached to the lining of his intestines. It weighed a total of 60 pounds! A colon cleanse could have easily removed it. A weight loss of 5 – 15 pounds or more often results after a colon cleanse.
If you do not move your bowels daily, you may be experiencing chronic constipation. A healthy frequency is two times a day. There are many adults who only move their bowels twice a week. This is not good as it can lead to many serious diseases. A person who is suffering from chronic constipation is one who has been experiencing the following symptoms for at least a year:
Less than 5 bowel movements a week
Feeling that you have not completely eliminated everything after a bowel movement
Stools that look like pellets
An unpleasant strained sensation during fecal elimination
Inadequate intake of water, lack of exercise, a low fiber diet, and stress are the usual causes of constipation. Stress affects even the contraction of the muscles in our bowels. When the body is in a normal state, the muscles in the upper intestinal tract tighten as the muscles in the bowel relax. When the muscles in the bowel do otherwise, problems occur. Constipation is one of them. However, handling stress induced constipation is beyond the scope of this article.
When your daily routine is interrupted such as when you travel, your regular diet and exercise are altered. This often results in constipation. Injury, a medical condition or a health problem can cause you to become less active and more prone to becoming constipated as well. As people get older, they become more and more inactive due to any of the reasons mentioned. This is why constipation is commonly experienced by older folk. However, more and more younger people are living a sedentary lifestyle and eating a diet that is highly lacking in nutrients. Studies show that 50% of children these days are suffering from obesity.
You can increase your dietary fiber by taking a supplement. You can take it as a pill or mix the powder form with water. These supplements have been proven effective however they can be expensive. A practical and inexpensive way to add fiber to your diet is by eating fiber rich foods. Fruits and vegetables are good sources and great tasting as well. You can find or concoct your own low fat but tasty recipes. There are many ways to have a healthier fiber rich diet without sacrificing the quality of your meals.
Exercise is another way to combat constipation. If you have been sedentary, do not overwhelm yourself with strenuous physical activity when you start. Begin with simple stretching exercises which stimulate circulation. It is important to get blood pumping into your muscles. As you go along, you can add more activities. As a beginner you can take a walk around the block or a do a quick lap in the pool. If you like biking, you can pedal to the corner store and back. Even if you do not suffer from constipation, these sustained exercise activities are great because they do a lot for your cardiovascular health.
The modern diet is causing many problems in our digestive system because of the large amounts of artificial ingredients we consume. This causes our digestive system to become lined with mucoidal plaque which slows it down. This means that waste matter takes a longer time to go through it resulting in constipation.
When symptoms of constipation continue for more than two weeks, medical attention is needed. Your doctor can determine what is causing your condition so you can decide on what treatment to go for, based on the options available. The combination of a colon cleanse and a healthy diet has provided tremendous relief to many sufferers.
Keep your colon and intestinal tract cleansed so waste matter does not clog it up. Monitor the frequency of your bowel movements. Products that contain high fructose corn syrup, mineral oil, aspartame, milk of magnesia and a high fat content should not be used. It is important to keep in mind that you should include 15 grams of fiber in your diet everyday.
As long as you exercise regularly, eat a diet high in fiber, are well hydrated and use a safe and natural colon cleanser, having regular bowel movements will not be a problem.
