Be Prepared Before You Try to Quit Smoking

Written by Kathryn Stovall on February 13th, 2010

It can be very difficult to quit smoking, no matter if you smoke a couple of cigarettes a day or a full pack, or if you\’ve been smoking for 1 year or 10. I have tried myself to quit on a number of occasions and each time I have always started back for one reason or another. I hate that I smoke and would like someone just to come and babysit me day after day to make sure I don\’t light up. I want to get this information out there not only for myself, but for anyone that may find it useful, and also I want to use it as a guide and reminder to myself so I can know what I need to do to make it work this time.

Cigarettes are addictive, very addictive, it will take a lot of determination and a real desire to quit in order to actually be able to stop successfully. It will take time and preparation so that you can make sure you are mentally ready to take on the challenge of stopping smoking. If you start off with the mind set that you are bound to fail, then you most likely will fail. You will need to keep telling yourself that you can do this, and that you can make it through. A typical craving for a cigarette lasts only 3 minutes! Can you believe that? So if you can make it past those three minutes, time after time you will be home free. If you take the time to prepare in advance, it will make all the difference in how successful you are when you do decide to quit.

Knowing what to expect and how to handle the situations that come up that could possibly hinder your success will help you with your attempts to quit smoking, it will make it easier for you to stick with a method once you find one that works. Read them over and consider all your options and figure out what you think would be best for you before you decide to live smoke free.

Why do you want to stop smoking? Ask yourself this, and write it down. A lot of people will want to stop smoking because someone else wants them to. If this is your reason you could be doomed for failure. Whether you smoke or not, this is your own personal decision to make, and it needs to be because you want to do it for yourself. It will be hard to find motivation if you do not really want to stop. Personally for me, my children are on the top of my list. I want to be around for when they are older, so its not technically for them, its for me to be around them. I am taking care of them now, so its only fair that they have to take care of me one day!

Figure out what the reasons are that make you want to smoke. Do you enjoy the flavor, or does it help you relax? Everyone will have their own reasons why they want to hang onto the habit. What are the reasons that have you hooked? When I go outside to smoke, i get a break from the chaos. I get to take a moment to look at the sky and enjoy the quiet. I need to remember that I can do this without a cigarette in my hand. So keep the same habit, but without the cancer stick.

Educate yourself. Research and learn. You can find all kinds of information on line. If you know now what smoking does to your body, and what the consequences are to your health and those around you when you light up, it could serve as a great motivational tool. You can find some pretty nasty things on line about what smoking can do to you. Having a visual aid of the nasty side effects will help you. You can also download a counter, that will keep up with how much money your saving and how much life your saving. These are great for a visual reminder of why you are doing what your doing.

Set realistic goals for yourself. If you set goals that are impossible to reach you will be setting yourself up to fail. If it was an easy thing to stop smoking, then there wouldn\’t be such a hard habit to get rid of. I recently tried my hand at cold turkey. I manged to quit for 2 weeks. It only took one little bout of something stressful to make me feel like I just \”had\” to have a smoke, so I went and got one, and that was it, I was smoking full time again. I know I can try something else, just because this method didn\’t work for me doesn\’t mean that there isn\’t one out there that will work.

Do not be discouraged if you do not succeed on your first try. This is quite common and most people can not stop on the first try. This is why it is important for you to be serious about stopping smoking. you may end up trying several different methods to quit before you find one that works best for you. But you can\’t let yourself be discouraged and give up. You will definitely need to make some lifestyle changes. It will be very hard to quit if everyone around you is still smoking. You may need to consider how you will deal with this as it comes up.

The better prepared you are, the easier it will be for you to stop. This will not be a task that you can complete easily if you do not start off with all the right preparations and knowing what to expect. If you just jump right into quitting you may be unsuccessful. Take the time to know what your options are before you start to quit and pick what you think will work best for you.

Since I am trying to quit myself, I will be writing about certain resources I find. Everyone trying to quit should come together as a massive support group. I will seek out forums for that exact thing over time! I hope this has helped you!
