You Can Quit Smoking If You Take It Step-By-Step
Written by admin on September 1st, 2011In an earlier article “Quitting Smoking – It Is A Choice”, it has attempted to educate the smokers that it is really their choice if they wanted to quit their smoking habit. In this article, it further attempts to inculcate the smokers that it is really their own ability to choose to succeed or fail in their quest to quit smoking. Choosing to quit smoking is the first step in the step-by-step quit smoking timeline series… Read on to learn more about the first step…
(Please note that the article is not only meant for smokers and would-be smoking quitters, it is also for the general readers, the same principle can also be applied to any habits, any addictions that they wish to change or reform.)
It is an universal truth that no living human beings can force upon you to do any task of their choice, unless you have allow yourself to choose to do it. That’s right, unless you choose to do it, and allow it… It is your ability to choose.
Without any doubt, to succeed in quitting smoking, you have to first make it your choice to do so. Without this step, nothing else can really follows…
Often, analogies are a good way to present a point, here I’ll be using ‘learning to drive an automobile’ as the anology to illustrate the point.
Think back to the time you were learning to drive a stick shift automobile. You were faced with what seemed to be an insurmountable problem. Three pedals but only two feet to make them work. You first became aware of the complexity of the task. Let the clutch out slow, ooops too fast, jerky business, gas pedal down at the same time as you release the clutch, right foot for the brake, but the clutch must go in, or you jerk again.
A million mental signals: always thinking, using your brain.
It may be a long time back, but I’m sure they are still in your memories…you have spent time to practice, lots of practices, lots of harsh words from the instructor, lots of mistakes, lots of new adjustments, lots of efforts…and then after many trials, one day you found yourself driving the car with no stalling, no jerking and most important, no thinking – driving has become ‘second-nature’ to you, ever thought of how you did it ?
Perservering and with lots of practice, not afraid of the great difficulties, keep focusing on the goal of attaining the driving skill, consistantly working on it…these are the choices you have chose to make to allow yourself to go through and therefore you are able to achieve the driving skill.
I hope you get the clear picture now. It is the same as with smoking and your addiction – you have chose to allow yourself to enter into the practice mode, and go through the practices, day by day, month by month, until the smoking addiction in you become “second-nature”.
Now think again, have you noticed yourself lighting up at some specific times of the day, without any reminders, any prompting, any thinking ? How did it happen ?
This is because you have allowed yourself to be subjected to the practice mode – you have allowed yourself to practice lighting up at those specific times, day after day, month after month, and year after year. Such times may be: upon waking up in the morning, before sleeping, after each meal, after each coffee or tea, at each beer drinking session, thinking, waiting, and many others…
Did you noticed any similarities between the examples given above and the timings of your lighting up ? Did you also noticed that you actually did those lighting up so automatically ?
Well, well, well…what more can I say ? Use the same principle to apply to your quest to quit smoking, make it your own choice to choose to quit !
There is still time to choose to win the quit smoking race, but no more time to lose.
Get this clear – Choose wisely, make up your choice wisely – the choice you decide upon will have direct and indirect impact on you, your health and to the people around you, namely your loved ones, family members and friends.
There is no more time to lose. Decide on your choice.
To Quit or not to quit – Remember, it is your own ability to choose…, therefore, choose wisely. It is also the first essential step in the quit smoking timeline. Without committing to this step, nothing else matters !
Towards your wise choice.
