Acai Berry – The Origins

Written by admin on February 19th, 2011

Together the acai palm and the acai berry are indigenous to the swamps and floodplains that grow in the regions of Central and South America. In the native dialect acai translates to ‘fruit that cries or expels water’ and the acai fruit fits the description completely. Although the berry shaped a considerable segment of the food intake of scores of native tribes in those areas, especially in Brazil, the current burst in global demand for the acai berry has led to fostering of the palm, something that was not prevalent beforehand.

The acai berry is either dark purple or green in color, depending on the type as well as maturity of the fruit and drape in bunches of 500 to 900 fruit. Every berry is rather petite in magnitude – approx. 25 mm in diameter and has a strong resemblance to grapes, but with considerably less pulp. The copious seed takes up almost 80% of the entire fruit by volume and it is covered by a very thin coating of pulp. The berry is considered a food by itself and is taken salty or sweet depending on what has been mixed with it and as per indigenous as well as unique preferences. The pulp and juice obtained from it are served in a range of ways all across Brazil, Peru, Belize and other countries in the region; with granola, mixed with ice cream, in liqueur, etc. The increase in demand for the berry came about because of these pioneering uses and its recent promotion promotion as a dietary enhancement – in the form of instant drinking powder, juice, tablets, etc.

It is being advertised that acai berries are a wonder fruit but there are no independent scientific studies which confirm that this berry is capable of producing increased libido, heart health, skin appearance, improved digestion, heightened energy levels,  or reduced cholesterol. There have been numerous complaints from consumers that the manufacturers and retailers are scamming them and even though they have applied for refunds during the free trial period, the consumers are being cast off. If you are a potential purchaser, it would be shrewd to assess your options carefully before making a final decision about purchasing this product or not. In terms of nutritional content, anti-oxidant levels, and essential vitamin content, it is evident that the acai berry is typical in contrast to other fruits. Whatever little scientific studies have been conducted has revealed the berry in some of the forms mentioned in the previous paragraph works well as a contrast agent in MRI scans. The acai berry can be used too as a natural coloring agent and some tests point to that its use may bring down the proliferation of experimental leukemia cells in the laboratory.

Now that the plant is being cultivated, adequate quantities of the seeds are set aside apart for planting in new groves or replenish damaged or destroyed tress. Various times the acai seeds are milled up and used to make foodstuff for sheep and consist of part of organic soil used throughout planting.
