The debate rages on about whether goji berries have any extra nutritional value than just vitamins any other fruit would have.  This odd fruit has been used as a part of Chinese medicine for thousands of years, but has only started to grow in popularity in the west over the last decade.  The claims of goji berries are that is can improve eye sight, protect the retina, and even cure cancer.

Goji Nutrition

Some of the claims from the goji berries are actually accurate.  It is a highly nutritionally dense raw food.  Here is a listing of some of the vitamins and nutrients that can be found in goji berries.

  • Beta-carotene
  • Zeaxanthin
  • Lutein
  • Beta-cryptoxanthin
  • Lycopene
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin B12
  • Niacin
  • Zinc
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Calcium
  • Selenium
  • Phosphorus

There are also over 18 amino acids that are on Goji berries including; isoleucine, tryptophan, leucine, and Arginine.

The ORAC Score

An ORAC (or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is the score that is used to measure levels of antioxidant levels in food and other substances.  The higher the ORAC score the more the antioxidants that will be found in the fruit.  It is recommended that people consume at least 5000 ORAC units a day.  For example it would take about 22 apples to get the total ORAC unit score that you would need for one day.

On the other hand goji berries have a very high ORAC score.  Just 20 grams of goji berries will give you a full days amount of ORAC units for one day.  This means that just about one handful of goji berries, or one glass of goji berry juice will give you enough ORAC units for a day.

Finding Goji Berries

Goji berries are still not a common item, although it is easier to find goji berry products on health foods stores than it has been in the past.  They are also rather expensive.  Once you find gojo berries for dale locally you are going to have to fork over quite a bit of money to take them home with you.  Eating this healthy can become expensive.  But there are other ways to get goji berries.  Many websites now sell them online.  You can get all the health benefits at a much lower cost.  Of course this means importing them from Chine or Japan, so you will have to be willing to wait and pay for shipping.  Often the cost of shipping can increase the fees dramatically.

Many people who want the benefits of goji berries without the hassle and expense are starting to grow their own goji plant hedge.  Keep in mind that this can take three years before the plant will be ready to bear fruit, but after that time you will have a healthy and nutritious snack right in your own back yard.  It is a much less expensive way to do it.  Check you government restrictions on importing the plants as this might be illegal.  Although there are many retailers of goji plants already in the U.S.
