The Atkins Diet

There are many different diet plans that have emerged of time but few have been as popular as The Atkins Diet. During the 1990s, The Atkins Diet exploded as a major diet fad, but calling it a fad would be a very poor classification. Whether or not the diet is popular is irrelevant, what is important is whether or not the diet plan will work. And this diet can definitely work and deliver great results.

Contrary to popular belief, The Atkins Diet did not first emerge during the 90s. It first appeared in the 70s and was shortly popular until its re-emergence in the 1990s. This diet was derived from Dr. Robert Atkins\’ discoveries, a physician who was also suffering from obesity.

Based on his research, he felt that one of the most common causes of excess weight gain was not the concept of eating high fat or calorie diets. Rather, it was the presence of excess carbohydrates in the diet that was the culprit of obesity. In 1972, he wrote a bestseller entitled The Atkins Diet Revolution but the revolution was short lived until its aforementioned resurgence in the 1990s. Perhaps it was a lack of adequate publicity that led to its demise in the 1970s. Thankfully, it returned and people have been strongly prescribing to it.

Why exactly do carbohydrates cause weight gain? Carbs are one of these components that make up the food people eat. The other two being protein and fat. The main purpose of carbs is to provide energy for the body. When you do not have carbs and you use a lot of energy, stored fat will be turned to as the source. This means your body will burn fat greatly, when you cut out carbs.

Carbohydrates lead to the body raising its insulin levels as well. Insult promotes the storage of body fat, and when your body has a low insulin level, it becomes less difficult to maintain excess body fat. So being a part of The Atkins Diet raises the potential to shed excess weight.

When you start The Atkins Diet, you enter into something known as the induction stage. This is where you completely eliminate the body of all carbs. You literally eat no carbs other than a small amount derived from vegetables or fruits for several days to weeks to allow the body to metabolize a lot of your stored fat. Once you have reached the weight you are pleased with, you can increase your carb intake but only to the point that it maintains your current weight.

What happens if you start to gain weight? Well, you simply would return to the induction stage and cut out all your carbs. This will further expand your ability to shed weight once again.
